New Beginnings From Endings

by RhondaShappert May 24, 2011 18:58

Meet Kitty, my mom’s 28lb cat. Yes, 28 pounds! He’s been a great source of comfort and entertainment to my mom and dad for the past 17 months while my dad fought lung cancer. Kitty will continue to be a great companion to my mom since my dad has gone home to his eternal rest. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers.

We just got home from the 22 hour drive from South Dakota where I was without cell phone reception and internet access for the week I was on the farm. I can’t tell you how overwhelmed I was when I logged onto my home computer and read all the messages of love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am truly touched and humbled by your concern.

Today’s brief newsletter is my reflection on the new beginnings that come from perceived endings. There are times in our lives when endings feel like the end of the world. The death of loved ones, not winning something you’ve prepared for, or relationships ending that you thought would last forever are just a few examples of events that may leave you feeling empty, angry or numb. It’s natural to want to blame other people, circumstances and things for the pain you may experience. But for you to have new beginnings that lead to greater, fuller opportunities some things must end even if it is painful at first.

Being raised on a farm, I saw evidence of this time and time again as we grew a vegetable garden and cleared out the trees around our home. Whenever we pruned the dead or scraggly parts of the plant, the rest of the plant grew bigger, healthier and produce more fruit than those we didn’t prune. In all things, there are times when we need to let go to become the fully productive person that God intended us to be.

The two blessings I received from my dad’s cancer was, first, a greater appreciation of time. Once I got over the shocking news that my dad had stage 4 cancer and had 6 months to live, I thought why do people wait until the funeral to say wonderful thoughts and feelings about their loved one. If the feelings are so important and genuine, why not say it to them while they are still alive.

So back in March, I wrote my dad a very lengthy letter filled with all the things I wanted him to know and I mailed it to him. In following conversations, he frequently told me how much he appreciated that letter, how he read it multiple times and how it helped him to have closure with certain things in his life.

By writing that letter, it allowed past hurts and misinterpretations between us to end. The result was the times we had together from that point on were of a higher quality than before.

The second blessing was that my mom and all four of us kids made it home in time and were beside my dad when he took his last breath. It was a peaceful and beautiful ending to his human life. He turned 70 on May 16th and went home to Heaven on May 17th at 12:55am.

Endings can be painful, but know that within them lie the seeds of new life.

Blessings,

1

Relay For Life Pageant Results

by RhondaShappert May 17, 2011 22:35

No Relay For Life is complete without a little rain. What a wonderful and emotional weekend it has been. I first want to congratulate the new WTP Relay For Life court: In the above photo from left to right we have the Sandy Dwyer, Ms. Queen; Brianna-Marie Bell, Teen Queen; Giovanna Vitale, Preteen Queen; Kiarra Anderson, Preteen 1st Runner Up; Katylin Sweeney, Little Miss Queen; Gabrielle Angel, Little Miss 1st Runner Up; and Jazahera Moore, Princess Queen. Visiting royalty was Amber Miller, Miss Ohio Elite USA 2011; and Gracie Fusco, Ohio Cinderella Miniature Miss. The People’s Choice winner was Giovanna Vitale. I am proud to say that the contestants in the pageant raised over $300 for the Relay For Life event that day. What a wonderful example of the good pageant contestants can do with their skills and abilities.

We had wonderful sponsors who made sure the stage was beautifully decorated with flowers and each contestant went home with a generous prize package. Special thanks to our following sponsors: Scioto Blooms, Ohio Miss American Coed Pageant, Pure American Girl Pageant, the Greenbrier Inn,Grove City Family Dentistry, Bob Evans-Rio Grande, Qdazzle, Avalla, and CVS Pharmacy.

Some of the court stayed for the queen’s lap and the Calling Out of Names Ceremony. As we released our balloons into the sky, I had a feeling I would be heading home to South Dakota for my dad’s funeral. After a year of fighting cancer, it is time for my dad to go home to our Heavenly Father. My deepest thanks and appreciation goes out to the wonderful people of hospice who have taken such good care of him in these final days. I leave you with two of my favorite funeral poems in loving memory of my dad. His 70th birthday would have been today. I love you dad.

God Saw You Getting Tired

God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you
and whispered,
"Come to Me"

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.

A Golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best

For those I touched

There’s no need to cry for me,
Because I now finally see.
That there is a special place,
For all of us to be.

I rode that cancer highway,
Open throttle all the way.
Determined to ride cancer free,
But God had other plans for me.

So when you smile for me today,
You know everything will be ok.
Because my memories will live within you,
For each & every day.

Till we meet again… Ride on!

Special Thanks to pageant sponsors:

Using This Four Letter Word Will Help You Win

by RhondaShappert May 11, 2011 17:55

? # @ !

Yes, you read that right. Kids and teens, you can use this four letter word without getting into trouble and get your parents to stop nagging you. You win!

Parents, you can use this word to get an answer other than “I don’t know” from your kids when you ask them a question. You win!

And wives, you can say this four letter word to your husband without making him become defensive and retreat into the man cave for the rest of the night. You win!

What is the four letter word? Hmmmm. Let me tell you what it isn’t first. “Why”. The word “why” can immediately throw up the defensive wall in some people. Think about your own reaction when someone asks you why.

  • Why did you do that?
  • Why do you do it that way?
  • Why did you say that?
  • Why are you so afraid of …?

Inevitably, when you start a question with the word “why” you’re going to get the answer “I don’t know” even though the person really does know why. “Why” is a three letter word, but it has the potential of eliciting a four letter response.

For example, in pageant land, it could be something as simple as dress shopping. What starts out to be an enjoyable shopping experience can quickly turn when the daughter turns to the mother and says “why do you always pick that style of dress for me?” Feeling her button pushed, the mother quickly fires back, “Because I like it and I think it’s appropriate on you.” A big eye roll from the daughter, and yet another button gets pushed in mom and on it goes.

So to turn any conversation into a winning experience, where both parties are understood and a deeper level of communication takes place, substitute the word “what” when you feel the urge to start with “why”.

Using our dress scenario as an example, the daughter could have said, “what is it about this dress that you like so much?” The mother could have said something like “I think the way the neckline brings attention to your shoulders. They’re one of your strongest physical attributes.” “Wow!” the daughter thinks. “I’ve never really noticed that about myself; but now that mom points that out, I think she’s right.”

The word “what” helps your mind immediately start to think of specific reasons, where the word “why” puts you are guard and it feels like a personal attack.
Here are some phrases to try out this week using the winning four letter word. Give them a shot and see what a difference it makes in your communication with people.

  • What did you mean when you said …?
  • What can I do to help you?
  • What do you want from this experience?
  • What can we do to make our time together more enjoyable?

Make sure your tone in using the word “what” is coming from a place of curiosity. You won’t have a positive exchange if you’re using the word “what” but thinking another four letter word in your head.

This week, be curious and substitute the word “what” for “why” and see what results you get.

You Have Seconds to Make a First Impression

by RhondaShappert May 4, 2011 07:21

The mark of a good pageant judge is their ability to quickly size things up, be decisive, and score according to what is taking place in the moment.

Whether I’m judging a pageant, a show choir competition or interviewing people for a job, I make my decision within the first 5-10 seconds. The remaining time is usually spent confirming my initial impression.

There are all kinds of studies and documentation supporting that a person’s first impression is made within 1 to 10 seconds. The numbers vary depending on the report you read, but the truth is people make a judgment about you within seconds, not minutes, of seeing and speaking with you.

The following excerpt is from The Tesh Media Group and I found the short article to be interesting and to the point.

“A man named Roger Ailes, a media strategist, famously said, "You have just 7 seconds to make a good first impression." And he was pretty much right. Our primitive ancestors needed to be able to size up a situation quickly and decide if they were faced with a friend or a foe. And we do the same thing today.

According to Yale University psychology professor Marianne LaFrance, 90% of a first impression is based on appearance, posture, facial expressions, and tone of voice. So here’s how to put your best foot forward.

First, know this, when you meet someone new, your hair style will get noticed more than your facial features. Long hair says, "My looks are important to me". Short hair says, "I’m confident and successful". And shoulder length hair says, "I’m intelligent and level-headed".

Next, your handshake matters. The Yale study found that people who make eye contact while offering a handshake that’s firm, dry, and vigorous – as opposed to clammy, limp, and wimpy – not only makes a better impression, but makes people believe you possess the qualities associated with your grip. Also, here’s something just for women.

Your instincts about other women are more accurate than your instincts about men. Why? Because women are programmed to want to make a connection with a man, so your opinions aren’t as harsh. Chemistry throws off your radar.

Now, what about charm versus cheekbones, which goes further? A good looking face or a charismatic presence? Charisma wins over beauty. If you seem confident, open to new experiences, and interested in others, you’ll get better marks than the good looking guy next to you.

But here’s the one thing you need to remember – a first impression is less about you, and more about making the person you meet feel good.”

I tell my clients time and time again: most of what you tell the judges will be forgotten by the time you walk away from the table. It’s more important how you say things than what you say. The feelings you evoke within the judges are what will stay with them as they cast their scores.

It’s very important to continually tweak your outer style and develop your inner qualities because the winning combination occurs when both your outside and inside images match.
